I just could not get the message across to some that there were huge holes in the coverage offered by the above. Equally unfortunate, a handful of these clients got first hand experience into the depth of those holes when their ?insurances? left them high and dry.

It has become a major problem for travel providers when they host clients without insurance. Especially for clients who travel to out of the way places, such as a remote safari camp in the middle of Botswana?s Okavango Delta. Many of these camps are only accessible by small aircraft. If you are injured or become ill the only way out is by air and a medic evacuation will be ordered which costs an arm and a leg. It takes up to 9 airline seats worth of space to lie one stretcher down in a cabin. These destinations now insist that proof of medical insurance be produced prior to arrival.

Your personal health insurance will cover you for basic services when traveling but not for major emergencies such as medical evacuation and repatriation. Travel insurance will also save you from being exploited in a foreign medical facility. You will often be given the medical treatment you require but will not be permitted to leave without payment. Having an insurance advocate (as in the travel insurance company) on your side will be a welcoming asset in this situation.

When traveling away from home we can never be over insured. Anything can happen when we go on vacation. The airline can go bankrupt leaving us stranded, we have to cancel because of a family emergency or we fall ill before or during a vacation. Having insurance will ensure that we are refunded.

There are a multitude of scenarios that we can insure for and for most travelers this seems overwhelming. It is best to choose a fully comprehensive insurance policy with a company that specializes in travel insurance. Consider what is more important to you and where you are traveling to.

Some insurance scenarios:

Prescription medication

If the airline has lost your luggage or it has been stolen and your prescription medication went along with it then a good insurance will be invaluable to you. You can access the resources needed to refill your prescription in the foreign country or state.

No cash or identity documents

Having no financial means or documents could be the result of theft or loss but either way a travel insurance policy can be very useful. Once contacted the agency can wire you some money and help you locate the nearest consulate so that you can apply for a new identity document such as a passport.

'DWTS' pro Tony got therapy after Kate Gosselin

"Dancing With the Stars" host Tom Bergeron said it best when tennis legend Martina Navratilova and her pro partner, Tony Dovolani, became the first pair eliminated from season 14 on Tuesday: "Sorry, buddy."

Sorry indeed. As many readers have complained about in our "DWTS" chats, Tony has been paired with quite a number of underperformers who had little chance of advancing far into the competition. And as Tuesday once again proved, many of these underperformers have come after season 10, when the pro was paired with reality TV mom Kate Gosselin, perhaps the dancer's most challenging partner to date.

On Friday, the pro hoofer, who has yet to win the coveted mirror ball trophy, appears on Anderson Cooper's talk show "Anderson" via satellite to dish about the popular ballroom bash, and he doesn't shy away from talking about his experiences with the mom of multiples.

"I always feel bad for you because you got stuck with Kate Gosselin," his host said. "I remember watching her dance. I'm still traumatized by that experience."

"Wait, wait. Anderson, did you just call it a dance? We didn't dance," the pro replied.?

Ouch! And here we thought the pro who has a seemingly infinite amount of patience with his partners was one of the nicest and would never speak ill of a current or past celeb partner!

That wasn't all Tony had to say about his experience ... um, performing with Kate.

The pro told Anderson that after he and Kate finished in eighth place during season 10,?he needed some professional help.?"There was a lot of therapy involved," Tony admitted with a chuckle.

For fans of the show who watched the season, that revelation may not come as a complete shock. After all, the pro became so frustrated during a rehearsal with Kate that he quit and walked out of the dance studio.

Army service shields Afghan suspect in stock case

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO?? Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 civilians in Afghanistan, left for war without paying his part of a $1.5 million judgment for defrauding an elderly client in a stock scheme, and remains shielded from the obligation as long as he remains in the military, legal experts said.

Before beginning his military career in November 2001, Bales worked almost 5 1/2 years at a series of largely intertwined brokerages that received repeated regulatory censures, according to regulatory records.

Bales joined the Army 18 months after an Ohio investor filed an arbitration complaint alleging unauthorized trading, breach of contract and other abuses against him, his securities firm and the firm's owner. In 2003, the arbitration panel ordered them to jointly pay the investor $1.5 million, including $637,000 in punitive damages for willful or malicious conduct and $216,500 in attorneys' fees.

Bales never appeared before the panel and did not hire a lawyer to represent him.

'We couldn't find him'
Earle Frost, a lawyer for the victim, Gary Liebschner, said his client never received any of the payment ordered by the National Association of Securities Dealers panel.

He said Liebschner could have taken Bales to court to enforce the award, but "we couldn't find him."

By that time, Bales had embarked on an Army career that included three tours of duty in Iraq and a fourth in Afghanistan.

Even if Bales's victim had pressed the claim, Bales had protection under laws that shield members of the military from some financial obligations.

Any active-duty member of the military can apply for relief from outstanding financial obligations as long as he or she makes less in the service than before, said John Odom, a retired Air Force colonel and a partner at the law firm of Jones & Odom in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Bales, 38, is expected to be charged Thursday in the March 11 killings of nine children and seven other civilians, who were gunned down in a late-night rampage.

His financial troubles add to the complex portrait of the man accused of the massacre.

His lawyer, John Henry Browne, did not respond to a request for comment on the securities arbitration ruling. He has said Bales joined the army to defend the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

His service in Afghanistan was complicated by mounting financial pressures back home, his lawyer has acknowledged. His home in Washington state had been listed for sale shortly before the alleged massacre.

Bales began his financial industry career in 1996 at Hamilton-Shea Group, a brokerage in Florida that was expelled from NASD in 2001 and fined $1.4 million over several issues, according to records from NASD and its successor organization, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA.

'Pump and dump'
Hamilton-Shea was "the kind of place where you learn to cold call, to 'pump and dump,'" said Joseph Dehner, a lawyer in Cincinnati, Ohio, who specializes in cases involving rogue brokers and firms.

Pump and dump refers to a practice in which firms artificially raise the prices of stocks they hold by aggressively selling shares to clients and then selling their own shares.

At least three Hamilton-Shea brokers who worked briefly with Bales pleaded guilty to violations of securities law after he left Florida to work in Ohio at Quantum Capital Corp., according to records from FINRA. Quantum also owned Hamilton-Shea.

Bales left Quantum in early 1998 to join Michael Patterson Inc., or MPI, whose eponymous owner had worked with him at both Hamilton-Shea and Quantum. Bales remained there until late 1999, then worked for two other Ohio brokerages until December 2000.

Patterson, whose firm was shuttered one month after Bales joined the Army, could not be reached for comment.

Neither FINRA nor the Ohio Divison of Securities ever suspended Bales, who simply let his securities license lapse, according to regulators. If an arbitration award is not paid within 30 days, FINRA can suspend a broker and would not allow him or her to join another firm during the suspension.

Mortgage issues
Bales had other money issues, according to The Associated Press. He was struggling to keep payments on his own home near Lake Tapps, a reservoir about 35 miles south of Seattle; his wife asked to put the house on the market three days before the shootings, real estate Philip Rodocker said, according to AP.

Bales and his wife bought the Lake Tapps home in 2005 for $280,000; it was listed this week at $229,000, AP reported, citing records.

The house was not officially put on the market until Monday; on Tuesday, Rodocker said, Bales' wife called and asked to take the house off the market, talking of a family emergency.

The AP reported that Bales and his wife also own a home in Auburn, about 10 miles north, according to county records, but abandoned it about two years ago.

"It was ramshackled," homeowners? association president Bob Baggett told the AP. "They were not dependable. When they left there were vehicles parts left on the front yard ... we'd given up on the owners."

It?s important to note the types of visuals we have that earlier generations would not have been privy to: we live at a time when, (from Jennifer Ouellette?s post), ?LIDAR has been used for search and rescue, too, most notably in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. For several days after the World Trade Center fell, a small plane made several passes over Ground Zero in Manhattan (and also over the damaged Pentagon in Washington, DC) taking LIDAR readings of the debris ? courtesy of a company called EarthData. The company used the collected data to produce topographical images of the sites. This in turn helped rescue workers navigate the often-treacherous terrain by identifying unstable areas likely to shift or collapse.? A stunning image evoking a terrifying day, used in the service of safety.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are campaigning in next-up primary states of Illinois and Louisiana, while Puerto Ricans get their say in picking the GOP's presidential nominee.

Puerto Rico's residents cannot vote in general elections, but are set to award 20 delegates in their Sunday Republican primary.

Meanwhile, Romney was hoping to cement his lead in Illinois ahead of Tuesday's primary, with chief rival Santorum in Louisiana ahead of that state's vote on March 24.

The former Massachusetts governor and former Pennsylvania senator both campaigned in Puerto Rico ahead of the voting.

But Romney dramatically curtailed his trip to the U.S. territory Saturday in favor of spending more time in Illinois, where polls have shown him slightly ahead of Santorum.

Romney will also appear on "Fox News Sunday," in a rare showing on an in-depth Sunday interview show. Santorum is to appear on ABC's "This Week" in addition to four campaign stops in Louisiana.

At issue in Puerto Rico's primary is the island's political status ? statehood, independence or no change. Puerto Ricans will vote on that in November.

Romney has support from much of the establishment here, including Puerto Rican Gov. Luis Fortuno, who supports making the island the 51st state. Romney is confident about his prospects for winning many of the island's delegates.

Santorum has said he would support statehood if the November vote were decisive. He also has spent days explaining his comment that English would have to become the island's main language for Puerto Rico to realize statehood. Only a fraction of Puerto Rico's residents speak English fluently.

Puerto Rico's delegates will be split proportionally among the candidates, though if someone wins more than 50 percent of the vote they'll receive all the delegates.

On Illinois stump, Christie sounds more like candidate than Romney surrogate

ELMHURST, Ill. ? With just four days remaining until the Illinois GOP primary, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney?s campaign brought out its biggest gun ? Chris Christie. But the New Jersey governor, known for his pugnacious manner and no-nonsense outlook, delivered an address that sounded more like a plug for his own presidential bona fides.

?When I ran in 2009, we had not elected a Republican in 12 years, and I was running against a guy that was going to outspend me three to one,? Christie recalled. ?They said ?it?s not possible for a Republican to get elected in New Jersey. It?s especially not possible for a conservative Republican to get elected in New Jersey.??

?Well, here I am.?

Christie?s focus on his own resume instead of Romney?s was an unusual turn for a political surrogate. Tight ?delegate math? this year has already generated discussion about the possibility of a brokered GOP convention in which anyone ? including Christie himself ? could emerge as a consensus candidate in August.

Christie played up what he said were dour predictions about his chances of governing traditionally liberal New Jersey from the right.

?They said, ?It?s going to be impossible for him to govern as a conservative Republican. He won?t be able to do it. He?s got a Democratic legislature, and Democratic liberal media. They?re just going to beat him senseless where he?s just going to have to give in and govern like a Democrat.??

But he turned deficit into surpluses, cut taxes and reformed pension funds in New Jersey, Christie boasted. Now, he said, the New Jersey legislature is fighting with him over which taxes to cut. (RELATED: Full coverage of the Romney campaign)

Again promoting his own political exceptionalism instead of Romney?s, Christie took a shot at Illinois Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn for doing the opposite.

?Here?s the difference between Republican governance and Democratic governance,? Christie said. ?Quinn raised your taxes. I vetoed the tax increase in New Jersey, twice.?

It was Christie?s biggest applause line during the Friday address, delivered to a crowd of about 500 at Elmhurst College, about 20 miles west of Chicago.

Christie eventually did bring his narrative back to Gov. Romney, but his stump-speech delivery lacked the charismatic enthusiasm of his earlier self-promotion, and he praised Romney by comparing the GOP front-runner to himself.

?I absolutely believe in my heart that the same type of strong leadership [as mine] in the Oval Office can produce the same type of results for America. And Illinois, you?re going to turn the corner for Mitt Romney on Tuesday and said that type of strong leader to the White House for us.?

Observers who spoke to The Daily Caller were effusive about Christie but equally interested in discussing Romney?s political fortunes.

While Romney has taken flak for an inability to connect with younger voters, that wasn?t an issue for 17-year-old Elizabeth Diamond. She Romney earlier in the day. ?I really enjoyed it,? Diamond told TheDC. He made a great impression.?

Diamond said that while she?s not eligible to vote in the primary, she will cast her first presidential vote in November after she turns 18. Although the event was during the day, she said her school excused her. She attended with her mother.

Tony Kovach, a marketing director at a publishing firm, said Romney was actually his third choice in the Republican primary, behind former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Kovach said he was impressed with Gingrich?s intellect and planned to attend two Santorum events Friday.

But come November, he said, his philosophy would be ?ABO: Anybody but Obama.?

Dan Rutherford, Romney?s Illinois campaign chairman, warmed up the crowd. He assured the audience that although Romney was not in Illinois for the event ? he was on his way to a string of campaign events in Puerto Rico ? he would be back for a full slate of Illinois events during the weekend.

Rutherford played up the familiar Romney theme of electoral invincibility, emphasizing that the former Massachusetts governor has collected more delegates than his three opponents combined.

He seemed to take special pleasure in jabbing at Santorum, pointing out that he failed to qualify to contest elections for 12 of Illinois? 54 convention delegates. Santorum faced a similar hurdle in Ohio.

After an event that left many with the impression that Christie, not Romney, was preening like a candidate, one Democrat in the audience ? Elmhurst College sophomore Tim Kushum ? said he enjoyed the experience.

?It?s interesting to see how all this works in the real world, how these events look,? the political science major told TheDC.
