Canada:JD Ventures launches new online retail website

Canada-based e-commerce affiliate company, JD Ventures LLC, announced the launch of a new online retail Web site at www.DawsonsDiscounts.com.

As an affiliate marketer of a variety of retailers, DawsonsDiscounts is an online shopping destination for internet shoppers looking to find internet deals and coupons. DawsonsDiscounts.com suggests a variety of retailers based on quality, price and limited time offers. Retail categories include apparel, electronics, beauty, living, sports, outdoors, and travel.

President of JD Ventures LLC, Jo-Ann Dawson, said, "With so many retail Web sites to choose from, we know that online shopping can be tricky. Shoppers want to find what they are looking for without any hassle, and they want the best deals! Dawson's Discounts has compiled the best coupons and deals from the most trusted stores on the internet."

New suggested retailers are added to the Web site periodically. Ordering and purchasing support is available through each of the individual retailers' Web sites. Online transactions are specific to the particular retailers, but in most cases, all major credit cards are accepted and items purchased through the sites can be shipped anywhere in the United States and Canada.

Dawson added, "Like a traditional shopping mall, we provide access to department stores and specialty shops that contain the latest fashions and products. However, unlike a traditional shopping mall, we have access to stores (and deals) around the world. Rather than spending time going from mall to mall or Web site to Web site to find the perfect gift or item, we've made things quick and easy!"

Indian diplomat attacked in court by Chinese traders

BEIJING: An Indian diplomat was injured and hospitalised following an assault by a large group of Chinese traders in a court, as he tried to secure the release of two Indians who were held hostage by locals, demanding payment of their dues in the eastern business hub of Yiwu.

S Balachandran, a diplomat at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai was rushed to hospital when he fainted after being "manhandled" by the crowd that tried to snatch two kidnapped Indians who clung to him.

The incident happened when he was leaving the court after prolonged negotiations on the night of December 31.

The two Indians had been held hostage by the local traders for two weeks for non-payment of dues by their company, whose owner had allegedly fled the country.

Riva Ganguly Das, the Consul General of the Shanghai Consulate of India told PTI here that Balachandran, working as Consul at the Consulate fainted when he was "manhandled", while attempting to get the release of Deepak Raheja and Shyamsunder Agrawal.

Balachandran, 46, tried to negotiate for their release for over five hours at a court in Yiwu, a big trading centre for a host of commodities.

He was assaulted when the two Indians, being held captive for over fortnight clung on to him to leave the surcharged place. The incident took place in the court and in the presence of police and the judge.

A high drama ensued as the crowd prevented the two from going along with him demanding that they pay millions of Yuan owed to them for commodities purchased from them.

They later pounced on them and snatched the two from Balachandran, who in the process suffered injuries especially to his knee. A diabetes patient, Balanchandran fainted after the assault.

Balachandran was rushed to the local hospital in an ambulance in a semi-conscious state by local officials and some Indian traders based in Yiwu.

Local officials reportedly apologised to Balachandran after the incident.

Though the court said Deepak and Shayamsundar were free to go, they remained in police custody fearing attack by the crowd. They too suffered injuries in the incident.

Balachandran was admitted to a hospital in Shanghai yesterday where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.

His condition was better and he is currently undergoing various tests, Das said.

The two Indians are lodged at a police station and the Consulate has appointed a lawyer to secure their release.

The two were held as captive after the owner of their company, Euro Global Trading, fled without paying the dues of local suppliers. The owner was stated to be a Yemeni or a Pakistani national.

The two Indians hailing from Mumbai say they were employees of the company but the local Chinese suppliers assert they will be released only after they pay the dues.

Their families were in touch with the Indian Consulate officials to obtain their release.

Over 100 Indian traders stay in Yiwu which is the centre of commodities trading.

Last year, Indian merchants bought over USD 15 billion worth of goods from the market.

Indians say such incidents are common in Yiwu as local suppliers target the traders whenever payments are not made.

Increase the Speed of Kindle Fire's Silk Browser [Kindle Fire]

Increase the Speed of Kindle Fire's Silk BrowserMany Kindle reviews noted the sluggish performance of the Silk browser, but you can quickly increase the speed by changing a few settings. In addition to turning off Flash and changing the browser from desktop to mobile view, turning of Silk's touted acceleration feature will all make Silk faster.

Lifehacker alum The How-To Geek provides these tips and makes an argument for not using a desktop browser mode on a 7" screen. All three tips can be accessed in the Silk browser by tapping Menu, then Settings and making the changes in the screenshot above.

Keep in mind that many sites, including YouTube, can operate fine without Flash. If you need to regularly access a site that no longer works you can of course reverse these settings at any time.

Rick v. Rick in Iowa GOP caucuses as Perry strives for 3rd place

by BRAD WATSON

DALLAS - It's the last weekend before the Iowa caucuses, and Texas Representative Ron Paul is neck and neck with Mitt Romney for the lead.

The former Massachusetts governor is at 23 percent and Paul 21 percent, according to the NBC/Marist poll released Friday.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has 15 percent, followed by Texas Governor Rick Perry at 14 percent.? Former Speaker Newt Gingrich keeps sagging at 13 percent.

The poll results mirror others that show Perry has a chance to come in third in Iowa, and put new life in his struggling campaign.

Friday, he tried to blunt the surging Santorum.

Texas First Lady Anita Perry joined the governor as the Iowa campaign entered the stretch, with the goal of trying to persuade Republican voters that Perry is the alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney.

But in Perry's remarks, the only opponent he named was Santorum, whom he tagged for supporting earmarks.

"I've talked about Senator Santorum over the course of the last couple of days, who I have great respect for him, but just yesterday, once again, he defended his prolific pork barrel spending," Perry said.

Perry competes with Santorum for Christian conservative and tea party voters.

But in the last few days, polls show Santorum surging, with Perry also moving up a few points to where they're both in the mid-teens of support.

Perry thinks Santorum is weak on spending and debt.

"Not only that, [he] voted to raise the debt ceiling eight times while he was in the United States Senate," Perry said.

For Perry to come in third, he must knock down Santorum, according to the Austin American Statesman's Jason Embry who's covering Perry in Iowa.

"But there is some hope in the Perry campaign that if they can come in the top three. then they can move on and start to rebuild. and maybe get Romney in more of an isolated race," Embry told News 8.

Perry can rely on his heavy TV advertising in the next few days, while Santorum looks toward the good will built up from visiting all 99 counties in Iowa.

Perry hopes the long-anticipated consolidation of anti-Romney Republican voters will start to fall in behind him, as Bachmann sinks and Gingrich continues collapsing.

That may not help Perry in New Hampshire, where the CNN/Time poll this week put him at two percent.

But a third-place finish in Iowa could help Perry in South Carolina on January 21, heavy with Christian conservatives and veterans.

College Football: Baylor wins record-breaking Alamo Bowl

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - If that really was Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III's final college game, what an incredible way to go out.

Just ask him.

"We went out in style!" Griffin shouted to his teammates.

It was amazing the Baylor quarterback had any breath left at all. Not after a record-shattering Alamo Bowl that might not only be remembered as the highest-scoring regulation bowl game in history, but also possibly as Griffin's last addition to his legacy in Waco.

The AP Player of the Year wasn't dazzling last night, but he didn't need to be as No. 15 Baylor still pulled out an incredible 67-56 victory over Washington.

If it was RG3's final showcase before jumping to the NFL, it was a gripping goodbye to watch. One of the nation's most electrifying players was upstaged by an even more exciting nail-biter that shattered the previous record for points in regulation set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl.

Fans showered Griffin with chants of "One more year! One more year!" as he paraded the Alamo Bowl trophy around the field. He stopped at the front-row stands and showed off his prize to his mother, who has already been looking at her son's NFL draft prospects.

Griffin said he'll start looking, too, soon enough.

For now, there was still the craziness of this game to sort through.

"I want Baylor nation to enjoy this," Griffin said. "It's not about me. I've got about two weeks. I'll enjoy this the next day, and then the next day, and then I'll make it."

The previous bowl record for a regulation game was 102 points in the 2001 GMAC Bowl between Marshall and East Carolina. That game went to double overtime and ended with a combined 125 points, which still stands as the overall bowl record.

Baylor, which a bowl game for the first time since 1992, and Washington (7-6) also set a bowl record for total offense with 1,397 yards.

NO. 25 FLORIDA STATE 18, NOTRE DAME 14: Florida State rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit and used a pair of touchdown passes by E.J. Manuel and two field goals from Dustin Hopkins to slip past Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl.

The victory was FSU's fourth straight bowl win. FSU receiver Rashad Greene, who caught one of Manuel's touchdown passes, was named the game's MVP.

The No. 25 Seminoles trailed 14-0 early in the third quarter before finding some momentum through the air. The Seminoles closed the gap to 14-9 with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Manuel to Bert Reed to open the fourth quarter, but failed on their 2-point conversion attempt.

They took the lead just 1:32 later after Nigel Bradham intercepted a Hendrix pass inside the Notre Dame 20 to set up an 18-yard touchdown catch by Greene to make it 15-14 with just over 13 minutes to play following another failed 2-point try.

The Seminoles added their second field goal of the game a series later.

Miami Investigation: The University of Miami is giving back $83,000 it says it received "directly and indirectly" from Nevin Shapiro, the former Hurricanes booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect whose claims of giving athletes and recruits extra benefits for nearly a decade sparked an NCAA investigation.

Court records show the agreement between the school and bankruptcy trustee Joel Tabas was filed last week.

Penn State Search: Penn State's search to replace fired coach Joe Paterno could be wrapped up in the next few weeks.

Acting athletic director David Joyner said yesterday he'd like the next coach to have time to interact with recruits before high school seniors can announce their college choices starting February 1.

A four-day contact period for coaches begins Wednesday - two days after the 24th-ranked Nittany Lions face No. 20 Houston in the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas. Another 16-day contact window starts Jan. 13.
